Google's modular mobile phone new prototype exposure: pilot sales in the second half

Google today announced details of the Project Ara modular phone, and will launch a limited sales pilot in Puerto Rico in the second half of this year. At Project Ara's Modular Developers Conference in Mountain View, Calif., the project's director, Paul Eremenko, explains why the product is limited to be promoted outside of Silicon Valley.

According to Alymonk, Puerto Rico has a wide variety of mobile phone users, and the sales of entry and high-end phones are basically the same. The proportion of local mobile devices is also relatively high, and about 75% of online activities occur through mobile devices. However, Puerto Rico is still located in the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), so Google still needs to comply with the relevant regulations.

Google will also collaborate with 11 institutions at the University of Puerto Rico system to bridge the gap between Google's Advanced Technology and Projects Group and Puerto Rican researchers and laboratories who are interested in trying to modularize mobile phones.

Google will not sell Project Ara equipment independently in Puerto Rico. Allemmon said that Ingram Mobile will be responsible for retail matters, and OpenMobile and Claro will become the company's cooperative operators.

Elim Munk also revealed details of the existing Project Ara second-generation prototype Spiral 2: the product will have two application processor modules to choose from, one from Rockwell and the other based on Nvidia K1. The screen resolution is currently 1280×720, which supports 3G technology.

Looking ahead, Google acknowledges that there is still a lot of work to do before launching products that are widely accepted by consumers. Alemenko said that Spiral 3 will support 4G LTE and will reserve more battery space. Alemenko said that battery life is a big challenge for Project Ara, which is 20% to 30% less than a similarly configured traditional smartphone. He hopes that Spiral 3 will be able to achieve full-day life.

In addition, Google also hopes to increase the number of available modules when Spiral 3 is launched later this year. The current total number of modules is 11 and is expected to reach 20 to 30 by the end of 2015, including the LTE module mentioned above and a better camera.
