Recently, a research team led by scientists from the Argonne National Laboratory found that the adsorption of a layer of graphene on the contact surface of steel will greatly reduce its friction coefficient and wear rate, and can effectively prevent it from rusting. This process is low in cost and simple in operation, and it is only necessary to drop a solution containing a small amount of graphene between two contact faces. With the relative motion between the contact faces, the graphene will adhere uniformly and firmly to the entire contact surface.

For a long time, there are two main types of lubricants used in the industry: oily lubricants and solid lubricants, which have problems such as high cost, harsh conditions of use, troublesome replacement, and environmental pollution caused by waste. The research team estimates that if graphene lubricants are widely used, energy savings alone can save 2.46 billion kWh of electricity per year for the United States.
