New battery can be repeatedly charged and discharged tens of thousands of times
The researchers demonstrated a new type of battery using gold nanowires. In many cases, how long electronic equipment can be used depends on the life of the battery. However, this situation may not last long. US researchers recently invented a new type of battery using gold nanowires, which can be repeatedly charged and discharged tens of thousands of times. This breakthrough may make it possible for a commercial battery that has a long production life or even a lifetime without replacement. Nanowires are only a few thousandth of the diameter of hair, but they are highly conductive and have a large surface area for storing and transporting electrons. Researchers have been trying to use nanowires in batteries. However, nanowires are extremely fragile and difficult to withstand repeated charge and discharge and winding. In traditional lithium-ion batteries, they expand and eventually break. To solve this problem, researchers at the University of California, Irvine, USA, first coated a gold dioxide nanowire with a manganese dioxide shell, and then wound it together and placed it in an electrolyte made of a similar resin glass material. They found that this design is very stable and effective. Under normal circumstances, a lithium battery will be charged and discharged for several thousand times and it will be "finished". However, Miao Letai, a doctoral student in charge of this research, repeatedly charged and discharged experimental battery devices 200,000 times within three months. There was a case where the battery's ability to store electricity was reduced or the nanowires were broken. The researchers believe that this is because the gel outside the metal oxide can enhance the flexibility of the nanowires, thus avoiding the fracture. This research proves that nanowire materials will make batteries with extremely long life become a reality. One of the authors of the paper, Regina Peña, director of the chemistry department of the school, believes that this discovery is the result of diligence and luck. He introduced that when he was doing experiments, Myloyte inadvertently covered the nanowires with a thin layer of colloidal film and then charged and discharged it. As a result, it was found that this method can greatly increase the number of charge and discharge of the battery, and it does not lead to a decrease in the power storage capacity of the battery. This research result was published in the latest issue of the American Chemical Society Energy Research Letter. (Reporter Liu Yuanyuan)
