New progress in research on abnormal photovoltaic effect of ferroelectricity
Ferroelectric photovoltaic is a new and important physical effect discovered in the 1970s when studying the optoelectronic properties of ferroelectric materials. Because there is a fundamental difference from the photovoltaic effect of conventional pn junction solar cells, this phenomenon is often referred to as anomalous photovoltaic effect or bulk photovoltaic effect. In recent years, as human society continues to pay attention to energy and environmental issues, research on ferroelectric photovoltaic effects has continued to heat up. At present, various models of the physical mechanism of the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect have been proposed. Although there are still disputes between them, it is generally accepted that it is closely related to the polarity of the material. Recently, the research team of Yi Zhiguo, the Key Laboratory of Functional Nanostructure Design and Assembly, Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, discovered a symmetrical bismuth vanadate material during the cross-scientific research of ferroelectric physics and photocatalytic chemistry Has a large abnormal photovoltaic effect. In the process of microstructure characterization in cooperation with the team of Li Yongxiang, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, it was further discovered that there were large local strain fluctuations within the bismuth vanadate material. After in-depth systematic research, it is revealed that the abnormal photovoltaic effect originates from the local symmetry breaking mechanism induced by strain fluctuations. And, the abnormal photovoltaic effect can be modulated by strain control. This work not only subverts the traditional understanding that the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect only exists in polar compounds, but also provides new possibilities for the application of bismuth vanadate materials. Relevant achievements were published in "Advanced Materials" a few days ago. Dr. Liu Xitao of Fujian Institute of Structures and Dr. Zhang Faqiang of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics were the first authors of the paper. During the review process of the paper, it was highly evaluated by journal editors and review experts, and was regarded as a landmark progress in the field of ferroelectric photovoltaics. The work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Frontier Science Key Projects, and the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key R & D Program. In the process of the experiment, it was also supported by the cooperation of Shanghai Silicate Researcher Zeng Huarong and Australian National University Professor Liu Yun.
