Perovskite Composite Materials Improve Solar Cell Efficiency

Perovskite Composite Materials Improve Solar Cell Efficiency

Scientists from the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have created multi-layer hybrid photovoltaic cells made from different perovskite materials with 26% peak efficiency. It is said that this type of battery can be easily sprayed onto flexible surfaces to make flexible, high-efficiency solar panels.

This solar cell uses a hybrid organic-inorganic conglomerate perovskite that captures incoming photons in a manner similar to common silicon-based solar cells, converting the energy into current, however, unlike current rigid silicon semiconductor materials that require a lot of Solar cells can be made with expensive processing and operation. The perovskite photovoltaic devices used in such solar cells are cheaper and easier to manufacture.

The efficiency of this type of solar cell is also very high, thanks to the two types of perovskite interlayers separated by a one-atom thick hexagonal boron nitride layer, each perovskite layer being designed as a graded bandgap layer, having low resistance and high gain Can absorb different wavelengths of light. This combination effectively collects and converts most of the photons in the spectrum into energy.

The current standard efficiency of this new solar cell is 21.7%, which is 10% to 20% higher than that of standard polycrystalline silicon solar cells used in many commercial devices and home solar systems.
