European Large Hadron Collider 2012 Increases Energy Finding God Particles

The European Nuclear Research Center said on the 13th that the European Large Hadron Collider will operate with a proton beam of 4 trillion electron volts in 2012, which is 0.5 trillion electron volts higher than that in 2010 and 2011. Scientists believe that increased energy helps find the "God particle" Higgs boson.

This decision was made by the European Agency for Nuclear Research’s (CERN) leadership after its annual benefit conference in Chamonix, France last week. The research center plans to optimize the operation of the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 and maximize the collision data. The goal is to achieve three times the number of ATLAS and CMS experiments and the 2011 proton collision.

Steve Miles, head of accelerator and technology at the European Nuclear Research Center, said that the LHC had selected a low-energy proton beam to run in 2010. Two years of running experiments have allowed them to confidently increase their operating speed safely. Further narrowing the search range of the Higgs boson.

Sergio Bertolucci, director of research at the European Nuclear Research Center, said that by the end of 2012, before the Long Hadron Collider’s long-term shutdown, the Higgs boson will be known.

The Large Hadron Collider will begin operation in March of this year and will stop operation in November. Then the technology will be shut down for 20 months and will be restarted in the second half of 2014 to accelerate the proton beam to a maximum design energy of 7 trillion electron volts.

The Higgs boson is a basic particle predicted by the standard model of particle physics. It is the focus of the current research on particle physics and has not yet been found. In December 2011, two groups of the European Nuclear Research Center announced that there were signs of the existence of the Higgs boson in data from the Hadron Collider. Some scientists believe that the scope for finding the Higgs boson has been greatly reduced and that this year may yield results. (Text/Xinhua)
