First SolarCdTe photovoltaic cell module efficiency reaches 17.0%

First Solar announced on March 19, 2014 that the module conversion efficiency of the CdTe solar cell developed by the company reached the highest 17.0% in the world. The previous highest value was 16.1% of the company's April 9, 2013 release. The results were measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

17.0% is calculated based on the area including the peripheral portion of the module. If only the "lighting area", that is, the area of ​​the power generation area is calculated, the conversion efficiency can be increased to 17.5%.

This time, the module was prototyped in the R&D facility of First Solar at Perrysburg, Ohio, using commercial-oriented processes and materials. In the future, we will use this research and development achievement to increase the module conversion efficiency of mass production products to approximately 15.8% in 2015. Afterwards, we plan to increase it to 17.7 to 18.4% in 2016 and increase it to 18.1 to 18.9% in 2017.

In addition, on the laboratory-level small-area CdTe battery cell, First Solar announced on February 25, 2014 that it achieved a global maximum unit conversion efficiency of 20.4%.
