Stuttgart studies long-term energy storage solar heating system
Researchers at the University of Stuttgart are preparing to test a solar heating system that can store long-term energy. The system, called Solspaces, is a three-year project that began in March 2012. The concept of heating draws on solar thermal power generation systems, and incorporates a "can" that absorbs heat to store the stored energy of the solar cells during the warm season and then release them at low temperatures. The concept of Solspaces is to reduce the "storage space" required for solar heating systems and to address potential insulation issues. Specifically, it involves a thermochemical heat storage tank (energy density is 3 to 4 times that of water) and improved thermal insulation, making the heat storage more compact and having less heat loss than traditional solar thermal systems. The high energy density benefits from the microporous mineral zeolite, which has a higher energy density, a lower drying temperature, and can absorb a large amount of water vapor. In winter, zeolite acts as an adsorbent, adsorbing humid air through the reservoir. When water vapor comes into contact with the adsorbent, it generates heat energy that can be used to heat the building. In the summer, the process becomes the opposite. The solar panel heats the air stream to 180 degrees Celsius (365 F), the adsorbent dries, and is ready to store heat again. The research team stated that there is almost no heat loss in this process because it is not necessary to keep the water tank at a high temperature all year round. The experiment will be conducted "on the fly" in a prefabricated compact house with a selected area of 48 square meters (516 square feet), primarily for surface/volume ratio considerations. The German Federal Ministry of Environment provided 650,000 euros (88.1 million U.S. dollars) in funding, and it is expected that the project will be completed in February 2015.
