1366 new type solar cell efficiency reaches 19.1%

The United States "Direct Wafer" manufacturer 1366 Technologies recently reported a superior battery to achieve 19.1% conversion efficiency of the battery, which was verified by the Fraunhofer ISE.

Utilizing its standard-size, non-cut polysilicon wafer technology, 1366 Technologies said in an interview with PV-Tech that a 1,000-wafer test run was performed on a test production line at Fraunhofer ISE using a passivated emitter back-cell technology (PERC) process to achieve an average 19% battery efficiency.

Frank van Mierlo, CEO of 1366 Technologies, stated: "The subversive nature of Direct Wafer's process technology lies not only in its significant cost and material savings, but also in its ability to break the technological limitations of traditional silicon manufacturing. With our new silicon process, The rapid and significant efficiency improvements we achieve will be further enhanced."

Van Mierlo said that it aims at more than 20% battery efficiency in the first half of 2016.

Van Mierlo added: "These recent achievements are exciting because they are acquired in the industrial production line, not the laboratory. They represent a real leap. We will be on a gigawatt scale at less than $0.40 each. Cost-effective production of high-performance silicon."

Recently, 1366 Technologies announced that it plans to build its first batch manufacturing center in Genesee County, New York, with initial production of 250 MW (50 furnaces per year, 50 million wafers per year), and future capacity increase to 3 GW.
