American scientists develop artificial leaves for photosynthesis and power generation

A few days ago, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced that they have used the stable and economical materials for the first time to successfully develop artificial leaves that can simulate photosynthesis and generate electricity.

This artificial leaf has a similar function, although apparently different from the true leaf in appearance. It consists of silicon, electronic components and various catalysts for stimulating chemical reactions. It can use sunlight to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can also generate electricity in specialized fuel cells. As long as the leaves are placed in a gallon of water (approximately 0.0038 cubic meters) for the sun, the electricity generated can meet the basic needs of an ordinary family in a developing country.

At the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, the results announced by Dr. Daniel Nocera of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology triggered great interest among participants. It should be noted that this is not the first time scientists have attempted to reproduce photosynthesis in the leaves made of artificial materials, but the previous materials are often unstable and expensive.

Based on a large number of experiments, Nocera and his team used nickel and cobalt, which are cheaper common catalysts. The results are very satisfactory. This poker-sized artificial leaf can be “worked” in the laboratory for 45 hours without tirelessness.

The next step in the work of the Nocera team is to further improve the efficiency and longevity of this artificial leaf for photosynthesis. Although it is still in the laboratory stage, the results of this research are of great significance to the future of humanity. Once it can be scaled up, it can continuously provide energy for humanity.
