The difference between hydrogen fuel cell and ordinary battery

The hydrogen fuel cell is supplied with hydrogen from a hydrogen electrode (fuel electrode) on the negative side of the battery, and is supplied with air or oxygen at an oxidation electrode (air or oxygen) on the positive electrode side. There is no electrolyte between the positive and negative electrodes, and the electrolyte separates the two poles.

Different electrolytes are used depending on the type of fuel cell, and there are acidic, alkaline, molten salts or solid electrolytes. In the fuel cell, the fuel and the oxidant act as catalysts, and during the energy conversion process, electrical energy and water (H2O) are generated through electrochemical reaction, so that no nitrogen oxides (NOX) and hydrocarbons (HC) are generated. Atmospheric environment causes polluted gas emissions. The difference between a fuel cell and a normal battery is:

1. A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that must have energy (fuel) input during operation to produce electrical energy. Ordinary battery is an energy storage device. It must first store electrical energy in the battery. It can only output electric energy during operation. It does not need to input energy or generate electric energy during operation. This is the difference between the essence of fuel cell and ordinary battery.

2. Once the technical performance of the fuel cell is determined, the electrical energy it can generate is only related to the supply of fuel. As long as the fuel is supplied, electrical energy can be generated, and the discharge characteristics are continuously performed. After the technical performance of the ordinary battery is determined, the electric energy can only be output within its rated range, and it must be repeated after repeated charging, and the discharge characteristics are intermittent.

3. The mass and volume of the fuel cell body are not large, but the fuel cell requires a fuel storage device or fuel conversion device and ancillary equipment to obtain hydrogen, and the mass and volume of these fuel storage devices or fuel conversion devices and ancillary devices Far more than the fuel cell itself, in the course of work, the fuel will gradually consume as the fuel cell power is generated, and the quality is gradually reduced (referring to the vehicle limited fuel). Ordinary batteries have no other auxiliary equipment. After the technical performance is determined, whether the battery is fully charged or discharged, the quality and volume of the battery are basically unchanged.

4. Fuel cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Common batteries also convert chemical energy into electrical energy. This is what they have in common. However, when fuel cells generate electricity, the reactive substances participating in the reaction are continuously consumed after being reacted. It is no longer used repeatedly, so it is required to continuously input the reaction substance. The active material of an ordinary battery changes with the charging and discharging of the battery, and the active material repeatedly undergoes a reversible chemical change, the active material is not consumed, and only some electrolyte or the like needs to be added.
